New Year, New Growth

There is something about a new year that feels like a deep exhale. The seasons change, we get to shed what isn’t serving us and bring in what will. Ultimately, we get to discover ourselves again.

What a great time to try your hand at starting your garden! Here are three tips to help you get started.

  • Start with what you have: Propagate. The new year is a great time to think about what you have and what you want more of. Most of our everyday fruits and vegetables have seeds or seedlings that we can use to start our journey. Here are a few of my favorites: bell peppers (save seeds), tomatoes (save seeds), potatoes (plant "eyes"), and watermelon (save seeds).

  • Get what you need: Be practical. No need to go broke starting your garden. You need a little soil, a container, a sunny windowsill (or a grow light if you don't have good natural light), and water. We can get creative later.

  • Put it in the soil: Life is a journey; we keep what serves us and let go of the rest. Just as we let go of the old to make way for the new, place the seeds in the earth and trust the process of growth.

Easy does it. Never forget your garden is your safe space, your sanctuary. It doesn’t have to be perfect; you don’t have to share it on the ‘gram. It is yours to cultivate in your own way. Just remember that you can grow where you are, you can grow what you have, and you can put the rest in the soil.

Let’s get started!
