Learn as You Grow

Repeat after me, “I don’t have to be a pro to start.” Now say it with your chest so we can hear you in the back, “I DON’T HAVE TO BE A PRO TO START!” Alright! You said it, I believed it; now close your eyes. Take a deep inhale, hold it for three seconds, exhale. Let’s begin.

Here are two truths: I am no pro gardener. I have a garden.

One of the biggest deterrents from starting something new is feeling the need to be a pro to start. You don’t, and if you are hesitating, here are some tips to help you find your confidence.

  • Prepare the space—Clean up, clean up. Make room for the things that are going to grow and challenge you. Your plants need room to find themselves, and you need room to cultivate your green thumb. It doesn’t have to be a large space; in fact, I suggest you start with a small corner of the room and work from there.

  • Refresh the soil—Let’s give you and your plants the best opportunity for success. Fresh soil. I suggest potting soil for potted plants and planters. Some fresh soil, some plant food, and a good amount of sunlight/grow light, and now we’ve optimized for successful outcomes.

  • Experiment—Plants are resilient, and so are you. Try it all; have fun. Rules don’t exist in your garden. Make it a place for you to create new versions, new methods, make mistakes, and learn as you grow.

The trick is to just start. Don’t overthink; don’t overanalyze. Just do it, do it again, and do it differently.

Happy gardening!
