Rest and See what Grows

Our gardens are our mirrors. I don't know about you, but mine has been a little foggy lately. If last year taught us anything, it is that life is unpredictable. It can be easy to fall into despair; one month into the new year, and that reality continues to ring true. And the whole 'find your inner strength' mantras just don’t hit like they used to. To the people holding it together by a rickety branch: listen to me, let that thing break. Don't hold it together. When it feels like everything is falling apart, rest for a while and see what grows.

As gardeners, we are stewards of nature. We help create environments where plants can thrive, and in doing so, we take care of both the environment and ourselves. But some plants—no matter the stewardship—are not going to thrive in the environments we curate. Sometimes seasons change, and what was once a flourishing garden becomes unrecognizable.

However, a state of dormancy should not be mistaken for a lack of growth. In fact, it is necessary for branches to break, leaves to fall, and stems to die. Can you imagine a tree vigorously holding onto its leaves during the winter? It must lose them to survive. Similarly, when things are falling apart in our lives, it is important that we allow them to fall—not because we have given up, but because it is necessary for new growth.

Happy New Year! We are in for quite the journey, and we look forward to continuing to grow with all of you.

Happy Gardening!
